A friend of mine posted a link recently to "No Poo." If you've never heard this term, it may sound like a term for the toilet functions, but it's for another party of the bathroom - the shower. Poo is short for shampoo. I've heard for a while about how awful shampoo is for your hair, all the chemicals, and now links to cancer, but figured there was nothing I could do about it. Most "all natural" shampoos are extremely expensive, but then I saw this article...baking soda and apple cider vinegar and water - total cost about $2.50.
Here's how I did it today, my first day. I put 1 tablespoon of baking soda in one plastic cup and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in another plastic cup before I got in the shower. I have read about 6 different blogs about the no poo stuff, one site said to make a paste with the baking soda, another said to dissolve it completely so it was like a liquid. I really think it depends on length and thickness of hair. For my length, right past my shoulders, I used a cup of water on the baking soda and dissolved it completely. Then, I poured a little onto the crown of my head and massaged it in, tilted my head, poured more on...you get the idea. You're supposed to massage it all in, really working the roots. When your satisfied with it being all worked in to your hair, rinse it out. With the vinegar, yes it smells, but smelling my hair right now, I can't smell it at all. I mixed the vinegar with a cup of water as well. This acts as the conditioner, but I massaged this in also, then rinsed it out. (Some only apply this to the bottom of their hair to avoid possible greasiness.
My only complaint is that my conditioner makes it really easy to brush through my extremely fine and easily tangled hair, and the vinegar mix didn't really help that. However, after I got my hair dry, it feels sooooo soft.
From what I've read, you start out doing it every other day, and eventually, you'll be able to only wash your hair about once a week...again, depending on the type of hair you have.
Unfortunately right now, I don't think I'm going to be able to go every other day without washing my hair since I just started P90X, and if you have heard about it, you know that I sweat just a little bit doing that work out. :)
So, if you're in to trying new things, and SAVING MONEY!, give the no poo a shot. Google it, figure out what works best for your hair! And, make sure you post on here about your experience!
